Er…It’s Been Awhile

So, I realize it’s been a minute since I posted an update here. For that, I apologize — but I’m not that sorry, to be honest, because I’ve been busy, alright? Geez. Here’s some stuff that’s happened, in a nutshell, since that last bit of news about me writing my second Billboard cover story (yeah, yeah, that was last October, over a year ago):

December 2011 – January 2012: I wrote some stuff for Billboard‘s Year-End and Best 2012 Bets issues.
January 2012: I accepted a position at SPIN as its online News Editor.
January 2012 – July 2012: I wrote a lot of stuff for SPIN.com, including a review of André 3000′s kale recipe.
July 2012: SPIN was sold to Buzzmedia, and I got laid off soon thereafter.
August 2012 – September 2012: I freelanced full-time, writing stuff like this, this, this and this for outlets like The Village Voice, Tumblr, Vice, and Rolling Stone.
October 2012: I started a full-time, freelance editing project with Rolling Stone, building out cool, Facebook Timeliney artist pages like this from 45 years of magazine archives.

So, basically, stuff has been weird. Now do see why I haven’t updated? Do you forgive me yet? Anyway, in addition to editing/HTML-ing with Rolling Stone, I’ve been working on a couple bigger projects (you know, writing, reporting, that kind of thing — journalism!) that should be debuting in the coming months, as well. Exciting (though, admittedly, exceedingly terrifying) times, these. Stay tuned — if you’re the impatient type, you can always check out my Tumblr instead.

Baby’s Second Cover Story: How Mac Miller Beat the Majors

Two weeks ago, I had my second cover story come out! The best part about it was that, a week later, the subject, Pittsburgh up-and-coming rapper Mac Miller, made indie history by debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 144,000 records sold–more than any other independently distributed artist since 1995 (that was Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food). Translation: I got to write a story that turned out to be for a reason. Rejoice!

Anyway, there were a bunch of tidbits that didn’t make it into the article, but I want to share them. So, kiddos, for starters, check this out:

Hey, everyone, guess what? In a little under 7 months at Billboard, I’ve managed to churn out my very first cover story! It’s about this great Sub Pop band, the Head and the Heart, and was published in Billboard‘s “Independents Day” issue, which hit streets July 2. The planets certainly aligned on this one, as I was originally turned on to this band by a very good friend, Christian Hansen, when he directed the music video for their song “Lost in My Mind.” His work is always breathtaking (see: this other incredible video), so you should check that out, as well.

Thus far, life is preeeeeeeetty sweet.

That’s right; I updated my Published Clips page. Check it out. There’s something wonky going on in my WordPress HTML that’s making it seem like that Chicago/Robert Lamm piece was published at the Dig, but that is clearly proven false, if you click through the (broken) image. I’m working on it.

Cleverness

Can someone quoting one of my tweets be considered a “clip”? Probably not. Yet, anyway. In any case, I’m going to tell you all: one of my tweets was featured in one of Paste’s recent posts, which showcased a selection of their favorite #fatindiebands ideas (a hashtagged word or phrase like this, for those unfamiliar, is a “trending topic” on Twitter that allows any tweet including it to be included in a search for that hashtag–click above on #fatindiebands and you’ll see what I mean. Think of it as tweet aggregation). Last night I was giggling like an insane person coming up with all of these, while my roommates looked on in shame, so I’m really excited that my dedication to punnyness has finally paid off. New Clip at the Dig

If you hadn’t already noticed, when you type in “devonmaloney.com,” as I’m sure so many of you adoring, wonderful friends, family, and fans have done, you are directed here, instead of my blog, Archipel-a-gogo. Doesn’t it make a whole lot more sense to have a site called Devon Maloney to be about Devon Maloney? I knew you’d agree.

Also, never fear, faithful fans (if you’re even out there)! I will be posting new clips in the coming weeks, mainly consisting of work I’ve done for classes that I’m currently working to get published. Expect some juiciness.

In the meantime, you can always peruse the original Archipel-a-gogo !

And welcome to portfolio-land. There are a lot of fun things going on here, so take a look around.

I am particularly interested in design and believe that aesthetic presentation is an indispensable aspect of successful journalism. If I’ve done my job right, this website clearly demonstrates my interests in multimedia, magazine, and narrative journalism, without “mantras,” wide-sweeping generalizations about “the changing world of journalism,” or any other cliché introduction that so many online portfolios contain.

The main idea I’m trying to give here is that I am an energetic, creative individual with a sense of humor and a strong work ethic. If that’s not apparent, let me know.
